Ruben Amorim's struggles at Manchester United: Is the revitalization dream over?

As Ruben Amorim enters the fifth month of his tenure at Manchester United, the club’s boardroom is likely filled with doubts and concerns. The high hopes of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sir Dave Brailsford have dimmed as Amorim’s early performances fail to inspire confidence. After the sacking of Erik ten Hag, United fans were hoping for a quick revival, but the reality has been disappointing, leaving even Amorim’s most ardent supporters with little to cling to.

When United decided to part ways with Ten Hag – a decision made a few months too late – they did so with the understanding that a change was necessary. At the time of Ten Hag's dismissal, the team was just six points off the top five, and the hierarchy anticipated challenges in implementing new strategies with unfamiliar players. However, what no one expected was the deterioration that followed under Amorim’s leadership.

United's current state is grim, with the team languishing in 14th place in the Premier League and struggling in all areas of the pitch. Their FA Cup exit to Fulham last weekend was hardly a surprise, as United’s problems run deep. Amorim’s management has not produced the anticipated improvements, and the question now is how much worse this situation can get.

United’s struggles are especially concerning when compared to the rapid progress seen under other managers who’ve taken over struggling teams. Take David Moyes at Everton, for instance. Moyes has achieved 15 points from 24 since taking the reins, an improvement that surpasses Amorim’s record at United, where the team has collected just 18 points from 48 under new management.

Other recent managerial successes further highlight Amorim’s challenges. Oliver Glasner’s impact at Crystal Palace, Nuno Espirito Santo’s turnaround at Nottingham Forest, and Unai Emery’s transformative work at Aston Villa all showcase how a capable manager can quickly turn a team's fortunes around. Even Eddie Howe’s work at Newcastle United ended the club’s perennial relegation battles, giving hope for the future.

One of the most telling comparisons for Amorim, however, is Mikel Arteta’s early days at Arsenal. Like United, Arsenal were in a lowly league position when Arteta took over. Arteta’s first season ended in an FA Cup victory, despite setbacks. His ability to implement a clear philosophy and improve player performances, despite a lack of immediate resources, is a benchmark that United fans hoped Amorim would follow.

Unfortunately, Amorim’s start at United has yet to produce any tangible signs of progress. His early work is reminiscent of the challenges Arteta faced, but Arteta’s ability to make quick, impactful changes helped Arsenal move in the right direction. For Amorim, however, the hope for a swift transformation is rapidly fading, and United’s supporters are growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of progress.

Amorim’s struggles at United are a harsh reminder of the challenges faced by managers attempting to revive a fallen giant. His inability to get the best out of players, many of whom have underperformed for years, is troubling. At this point, it’s not just the players who are under scrutiny; Amorim must now face growing concerns from the club’s executives and fanbase about the future of his tenure.

United's outlook for next season is far from promising. Fans were hoping that a summer of tactical adjustments and key signings would spark optimism for the season ahead. Instead, there’s a palpable sense of fear and doubt hanging over the club. United supporters are left questioning whether Amorim has the right formula to turn things around.

Despite these concerns, it’s too early for United to consider a managerial change. Amorim’s appointment mid-season was always going to be challenging, and his preference for a pre-season to implement his vision and recruit players was understandable. However, after five months of disappointing results, the pressure is mounting. United’s hierarchy and fans expected more, and now the club is at a crossroads. Amorim’s future at one of the biggest clubs in the world hangs in the balance as he faces a critical test in the coming months.

For now, it seems that Amorim is struggling to keep afloat in the tidal waves of mediocrity. United’s hope for a quick revival is quickly fading, and fans are left wondering when – or if – the club will ever return to its former glory.
