'Brutal and dangerous': Ex-referee urges lengthy ban for Kylian Mbappe — This is the number he wants

‎Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe is facing mounting criticism following a red-card challenge in Sunday’s narrow 1-0 La Liga victory over Alaves, with former referee and ex-PGMOL chief Keith Hackett calling for a significant 10-match suspension.

‎The incident occurred in the 38th minute, when Mbappe lunged into a reckless challenge on Alaves midfielder Antonio Blanco. The referee responded swiftly, issuing a straight red card and leaving Madrid to battle with ten men for the remainder of the match—a task they narrowly managed to accomplish.
‎Speaking to Football Insider, Hackett didn’t hold back in his assessment. “Mbappe’s challenge was brutal. It put at risk the safety of his opponent,” he stated. “The referee acted swiftly by showing the red card. Now the authorities must show that there is no place in the game for this type of challenge by issuing Mbappe a 10-game ban. Come on now, let’s stop this type of action by any player in the game.”
‎The suggestion of a 10-game suspension may seem excessive by current disciplinary standards in La Liga, where similar infractions typically result in bans ranging from three to five matches. However, Hackett’s comments reflect growing concerns within the football community about dangerous play, even from high-profile athletes.
‎Mbappe, 26, is unlikely to face such a lengthy ban, but he is expected to miss at least three domestic matches. This would include key fixtures against Athletic Club and Getafe, and potentially the Copa del Rey final against arch-rivals Barcelona.
‎Fortunately for Real Madrid, the ban would not extend to UEFA competitions, meaning Mbappe remains eligible to feature in Wednesday’s crucial Champions League quarter-final second leg against Arsenal at the Santiago Bernabéu.
‎As disciplinary proceedings unfold, all eyes will be on La Liga’s Competition Committee to see whether they heed Hackett’s call for a harsher precedent—or opt for a more conventional response. Either way, Mbappe’s absence in domestic play could have critical implications for Madrid’s pursuit of both league and cup success.
